About Terras do Cigarrón

Money or a glass of wine. Either of these two things is acceptable to those parading through the streets, dressed up for the Verín Carnival in Ourense (Galicia), and they will not leave you alone until they’ve got something. 

At least that’s the tradition. Now, these mysterious and magical figures have a wine named after them: Terras do Cigarrón, a white wine made from the Godello variety in this town (southeast of Galicia, very close to the Portuguese border), by the Terras do Cigarrón cooperative in the DO Monterrei.

Terras do Cigarrón was created by 20 winegrowers who joined forces and established a cooperative in 2002. The star of the project is the Godello variety, which grows in valleys and slopes at an altitude of 400 and 500 metres in sandy-loam soils and is bathed by the typical mild temperatures of the Atlantic climate. Terras do Cigarrón is made through fermentation and aging in stainless steel tanks.

Godello has always been the D.O. Monterrei’s most typical white variety. However, it has always been in the shadow of the Albariño, which is much better known. Comparisons never tell the whole story though. Now the tide is turning and the Godello and its aromas are much loved and sought-after. Terras do Cigarrón certainly has nothing to envy in Albariño.

Terras do Cigarrón 2024 exhibits an alluring yellow hue with lemon reflections. On the nose, it is distinguished by a medium-high intensity, where one can discern notes of white flowers, as well as fresh aromas of tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, complemented by spicy hints and pome fruits like apple. On the palate, it offers a delightful freshness and elegance, with an aromatic profile that once again highlights the flowers and stone fruits, delivering a pleasant and balanced experience.

Terras de Cigarrón 2023 is an enchanting white wine that immediately captivates with its straw-yellow hue and golden glimmers. Bringing it to the nose reveals intense and alluring aromas of jasmine and orange blossom, intermingled with the sweetness of pineapple and mango, as well as a hint of vanilla. On the palate, it is light and invigorating, bursting with flavors reminiscent of peach and apricot, leaving a fruity and lingering impression that beckons one to continue savoring.

Terras de Cigarrón 2021 is an aromatic white wine, presenting a yellow hue with lemon highlights. Olfactorily, it is fragrant and multifaceted, exuding intense scents of white blossoms, ripe tropical fruits, spices, and pronounced pome fruit aromas. On the palate, it delights with its pleasant freshness, adorned with sophisticated floral undertones and stone fruit nuances.
