About Torbreck Hillside Vineyard Grenache

The southernmost vineyards of the Barossa Valley (in South Australia), is the birthplace of Torbreck Hillside Vineyard Grenache, a red wine made by Torbreck, the winery founded by David Powell and his wife.

The history of this winery began in 1994 when Powell, who had just moved there with his wife, decided to follow the local tradition and culture of the area, which was based on wine. To do this, he founded Torbreck, a winery named after one of the forests in Scotland where he worked for so long as a lumberjack. In this way, and with the help of local winegrowers from whom they buy grapes, they began to produce their first wines (always under the principles of organic agriculture).

For Torbreck Hillside Vineyard Grenache, the west-facing vineyards grow north of Lyndoch Township on high, gentle slopes of red clay, slate, quartzite and ironstone. The small bush-shaped vines, planted in 1949, give low yields but of high quality. Following the harvest of the Torbreck Hillside Vineyard Grenache grapes, which usually takes place in April, the clusters arrive at the winery, where they follow the principle of minimum intervention. This ensures that the wines are not filtered or clarified before bottling.

Finally, the wine is aged for 15 months in French oak foudres from Boutes (the French cooperage founded in 1880). Since 2008, Torbreck has been owned by Pete Knight, the American owner of Quivira Vineyards, the winery located in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County (on the West Coast of the United States); however, despite the leadership changes, Torbreck continues to be synonymous with quality. One of the best reds showcasing Australian excellence.

Torbreck Hillside Vineyard Grenache 2017 is a concentrated red. The nose is opulent with hints of liquorice, anise, red fruits, deep black fruits (pomegranate, blackberry) and hints of earth. The palate is structured, weighty and round. Firm tannins. Rich and exuberant fruit.
