About 200 Monges Blanco Reserva

Twenty-five years have had to pass for the 200 Monges winery to dare to produce 200 Monges Blanco Reserva, a powerful white wine, made from Viura grapes and aiming at quality and immortality.

It was in 1994 when winemaker Miguel Ángel Rodríguez released his first Gran Reserva red wine. Two years earlier, he set up Vinícola Real, a project in Albelda de Iregua, in La Rioja Oriental (formerly known as La Rioja Baja), which was inspired by the caves that had been excavated in the area by the ancient hermits for the construction of the monastery of San Martín de Albeda, a great cultural centre where 200 monks lived. Miguel Ángel Rodríguez dedicates 200 Monges Blanco Reserva to them.

200 Monges Blanco Reserva comes from vines planted in the El Charco plot (in the Najerilla Valley) and the La Rad plot (in the Iregua Valley), on clay soils. Among these old vineyards, which are mostly red, some white Viura vines and other minority varieties were hidden. The grapes are organically fertilised, always working towards low but high quality yields, where only the best bunches that have been organically cultivated are selected. In terms of climate, La Rioja Oriental is the area with the greatest Mediterranean influence, making it the warmest of the three areas.

200 Monges Blanco Reserva is fermented in new barrels at 14ºC for 26 days and aged for 24 months in stainless steel tanks and 14 months in French and American oak barrels. After this, 200 Monges Blanco Reserva is bottled and waits to be unveiled to the rest of the world. During this time this white will finish developing its character, with great aging potential that evolves perfectly over time.

2011

200 Monges Blanco Reserva 2011 presents itself with a brilliant yellow hue, inviting one to explore its complexity. On the nose, floral notes and aromas of white fruits such as apple and pear are prominent, accompanied by a subtle hint of fine lees. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and balanced, with citrus and spicy flavours interwoven with a rich and lingering texture. Its acidity is refreshing, and its saline character imparts an elegant and mature finish.

2010

200 Monges Blanco Reserva 2010 is an aged white wine. The nose is frank, with floral, fruit and pastry aromas. The palate is complex, with hints of citrus and spice. Unctuous and well balanced. Persistent finish with saline touches. Very elegant and subtle.
