About Alamos Bonarda

Bonarda is one of Argentina’s main grape varieties. Second only to Malbec, this grape, which currently occupies 18,153.2 hectares of Argentine vineyards, is grown mainly in Mendoza, in the heart of the Cuyo region in the centre of the country. And if there is a place where they know how to treat and cultivate it well, it is at the Catena Zapata winery, where the Alamos Bonarda red wine is made.

Wines like these show the great momentum that this variety is enjoying. Producers have recently discovered the great potential and versatility of this grape, which is wonderfully suited to hot regions, especially ones like the east of Mendoza, where vineyards lie at an altitude of 700 metres and above. In this sense, Catena Zapata is a benchmark, because they were the first in the region who dared to try cultivating vineyards at high altitudes, on the area’s poor gravel soils (with low yields but high quality).

So, from the El Mirador vineyard, lying at the foot of the Andes mountains at an altitude of 900 to 1,500 metres above sea level, Catena Zapata harvests the grapes to make Alamos Bonarda. In the winery, this red wine undergoes maceration before fermentation, which lasts about 24 hours. During this time, with the must in contact with the skins, they try to extract as much colour and as many aromas as possible. The following day, Álamos Bonarda is placed in stainless steel tanks where it ferments at a temperature between 28°C and 30°C.

The finishing touch is an aging of 6 months in French oak barrels, which is where Alamos Bonarda finishes rounding out and stabilising.
2023

Alamos Bonarda 2023 unveils a spectrum of aromas dominated by ripe cherries and raspberries, interwoven with hints of violets and a delicate thread of anise. On the palate, this red wine is succulent and dynamic, with a structure that is substantial yet approachable and moderately robust. Its youth is mirrored in the zest and vivacity that beckon another taste. Perfect for those in search of a fruit-forward and approachable wine.

2021

Seductive purple red with fruity and aniseed aromas and a sweet and pleasant mouthfeel. Isn’t it hard to resist Alamos Bonarda 2021? Overall, this is a juicy, clean and bright red that you will want to taste as soon as you see it. The nose is very intense and complex, blending fruit with flowers (violets) and some spices. The palate is smooth, with round tannins that are velvety. Raspberry, cherry and spices (black pepper) also appear here. Very pleasant finish where you can continue to enjoy its wonderful feel.

2020

Alamos Bonarda 2020 is a juicy, purple-coloured red wine. The nose is fruity with ripe red fruit aromas and notes of violets and anise. The palate is intense and sweet, with raspberry and cherry. Spicy notes stand out in the background. Round and velvety tannins. Smooth and sweet finish.
