About Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Appellation Paraje Altamira

When they bought the estate they had an unexpected discovery. In 1995, winemaker Alberto Antonini and businessman Antonio Morescalchi bought some vineyards in Mendoza (Argentina), right in the Uco Valley. But the two Italians did not know that the property already had several owners, hundreds of them in fact. Against all odds, and ignoring the advice of local growers, they went ahead with their project. But the colonies of ants living on the site fed on the vineyards and made life hard for the new owners.

Little by little, with plenty of patience, they finally got these tenants to move out and in 2016 they began production at the winery, which they called Altos Las Hormigas in honour of the previous residents. However, these is nothing accidental about these vineyards located in the Uco Valley (in the centre of the country) . The name also refers to the altitude where the vines are planted, between 900 and 2000 metres above sea level. These vines are growing Malbec, an “ignored and misunderstood” variety, according to Antonini and Morescalchi, on the terraces of Altamira, near the Tunuyán River (1,200 metres above sea level). The soil in this enclave is silty-sandy, with large stones and gravels covered with calcium carbonate. The rest of the conditions are provided by the mountain climate, with a wide temperature variation between hot days and cold nights (which helps the anthocyanins to develop, giving colour to the grapes) and the dry mountain air (which prevents the spread of diseases).

In terms of winemaking, at Altos Las Hormigas, they opt for the minimum possible intervention. “Each intervention in the winery is a small step that takes us slightly further away from the natural origin”. Therefore, in this winery, gravity transports things, colours are extracted without moving the cap, and they use natural oak. The result of this focus is wines like Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Appellation Paraje Altamira. The process begins with the selection of the grapes, which are picked from a double belt and vatted by gravity. Then alcoholic fermentation begins with native yeasts and continues in untoasted French oak foudres, where it will rest for 18 months. But the journey does not end here. Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Appellation Paraje Altamira will be lightly filtered and then rest again, but this time only for 12 months in bottle.

2018

Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Appellation Paraje Altamira 2018 is a taut, richly nuanced Malbec red made. The nose is very expressive, with notes of fresh plum, blackberry, hibiscus, citrus zest and minerals that are also present on the palate (complemented by fennel and dried fruits). Medium-bodied, with elegant and fine tannins, this wine stands out for its fresh acidity, structure, length and persistence.
