About Arnot-Roberts Kirchsemann

Undoubtedly, Robert Parker has been an influential voice in the wine market. His rating system, based on a 100-point scale, has become an industry standard. His influence has been such that many wineries have adjusted their production styles to align with his preferences, aiming to create wines that meet the quality criteria of the renowned "wine advocate." However, today, while some wineries still seek his approval, many projects are pursuing more balanced styles that are representative of the terroir. Arnot-Roberts is a clear example of this new direction. Founded in 2001 by Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts in Napa Valley, California, it focuses on varietals that reflect the uniqueness of the region, employing sustainable viticulture practices and winemaking techniques that avoid over-extraction and excessive oak influence. All with the aim of capturing the essence of each vintage and terroir.

An example of this work can be found in Arnot-Roberts Kirchsemann, a red wine from the zinfandel variety sourced from an incredible old vineyard called Kirchsemann. Vines planted in 1915 on sandy granitic loam soil are cultivated using organic practices. The harvest is done manually, selecting the finest grapes. Then, at the winery, the best grapes are sorted, destemmed, and gently crushed to initiate fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Finally, the wine matures in barrels before being bottled.  

Thanks to this approach, Arnot-Roberts Kirchsemann presents itself as an elegant, fresh, and light red wine, exemplifying the quest for a new identity for Californian wine, where authenticity and sustainability are paramount. It thus stands as a pioneer in the evolution of the new wines of California.
