About Aseginolaza & Leunda Camino de Santa Zita

Chameleon-like, versatile and very resistant to the increase in environmental temperature, garnacha is a delightful wine. Don’t believe us? Just ask Jon Aseginolaza and Pedro Leunda, two biologists with a passion for this variety, who have created their own project to reclaim the Navarre garnacha from old vines rescued from oblivion. With very limited productions and with the aim of enhancing the terroir of northern Spain, they make wines the way they themselves say they like them, ‘wines for opening the bottle and finishing it.’

An example of this work can be found in Aseginolaza & Leunda Camino de Santa Zita. A red garnacha grown in a small vineyard of 0.3 hectares located in the village of San Martín de Unx, in the lower mountainous region of Navarra. These are two small terraces of old vines over 90 years old that are located on a gentle slope of clay-limestone soils, 545 metres above sea level. They are cultivated dry and with the utmost respect, and the grapes are harvested by hand in boxes of 15 kilos at the optimum moment of ripeness. Once in the winery, 80% of the selected grapes are destemmed and the remaining 20% are left in whole clusters. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts and daily manual cap plunging. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in old French oak barrels for 8 months and finally bottled unfiltered, clarified by natural decanting and without additives, except for a minimal dose of sulphur dioxide.

With less than 1,000 numbered bottles and its own varietal identity, Aseginolaza & Leunda Camino de Santa Zita is a small gift for those who are enchanted by one of the most versatile varieties on the planet. A Navarre garnacha from old vines that undoubtedly has a soul of its own.

2020

Aseginolaza & Leunda Camino de Santa Zita 2020 is a smooth red wine with predominant aromas of aromatic herbs, accompanied by notes of red fruit, balsamic hints and touches of Mediterranean scrubland. The palate is round, flavoursome and fruity. A medium-bodied wine with noticeable acidity, marked tannins and a long finish with mineral hints.
