The lion is a universal symbol of power, strength, and nobility. Additionally, it is also seen as a guardian and protector. Thus, it is very common to find it in heraldry and the architecture of Renaissance and Baroque buildings belonging to high-status families. In Montepulciano, in southern Tuscany, Italy, lies Avignonesi, a magnificent wine estate with an impressive palace that houses a stone lion. This lion not only embellishes the palace but also represents the grandeur of this place with its unique historical richness. The estate, although retaining the name of its founders, has undergone a 180-degree transformation since 2009 under the stewardship of Virginie Saverys. A highly successful lawyer in Belgium who changed her profession and country due to her love for wine. Thus, she settled in Avignonesi and, with a firm belief in organic products and homeopathic medicine, transformed it into the largest biodynamic winery in Italy.
In honour of the stone lion that guards the estate, Virginie presents Avignonesi Il Marzocco Chardonnay Toscana as an example of the distinctive identity of Montepulciano. A white wine from the estate's own Chardonnay vines planted on clay soils with limestone layers and exposed to the northwest. It is cultivated organically with biodynamic treatments and, once the grapes reach their optimal ripeness, they are harvested by hand. In the winery, the grapes undergo a short maceration in an inert environment and then ferment with native yeasts at a controlled temperature. Finally, the wine is aged for 3 months in wooden barrels.
Considering that Tuscany is a wine region renowned for its red wines, Avignonesi Il Marzocco Chardonnay Toscana is a pioneering endeavour. A barrel-aged white wine that, like its owner, breaks with conventions to offer a powerful and noble expression of the Chardonnay variety.
