About Azpilicueta Instinto

Throughout history, there have been people who have stood out because of their great contribution to society. Their dedication and effort often inspire others to follow in their footsteps and work together to create a better and more prosperous world. Félix Azpilicueta was not only an influential name in the history of Fuenmayor (La Rioja), but he also played a crucial role in the development of the Rioja region. Committed to his community, Felix served as mayor and representative. However, his impact was felt beyond his own borders when in 1881 he embarked on his own winemaking project and demonstrated his ability to combine winemaking tradition with innovation. A true testimony to the importance of vision and “instinct” in the world of wine, which made him a pioneer in the export of wines in his time and a true benchmark in the Rioja region.

It is in honour of the bold and determined attitude of its founder that Bodega Azpilicueta has released Instinto, a 100% Tempranillo signature wine from 16 small plots in the municipalities of San Asensio and Huércanos, in the Rioja Alta. Traditional practices are followed in the vineyard and the grapes are harvested by hand when they reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the grapes from each plot are harvested separately in small vats. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation, partly in these same tanks and partly in lightly toasted American oak barrels. Finally, after blending, the wine is aged for 5 months in single-use French oak barrels and a few more months in the bottle before release.

The result is Azpilicueta Instinto, a signature wine that brings together the philosophy of a winery steeped in history. A vibrant, expressive and very gastronomic wine in which tradition and modernity combine perfectly. Undoubtedly the result of a visionary’s legacy.

Azpilicueta Instinto 2020 is a smooth red wine with aromas of ripe black fruit accompanied by sweet spices and hints of roasted coffee. On the palate it is smooth, silky and rounded. A very expressive medium-bodied wine with vibrant acidity, polished tannins and a long, sweet finish.
