About Badenhorst Family Red Blend

Badenhorst Family Red Blend is an organic, barrel-aged red wine made by A.A. Badenhorts in the Swartland denomination of South Africa with the Syrah, Mourvedre, Garnacha Tinta and Cinsault varieties.

Hein and Adi Badenhorst are cousins from Constantia who, having worked in different wineries, rebuilt Kalmoesfontein, their grandparents’ half-abandoned farm and set up their own project following in the footsteps of their ancestors. Badenhorst Family is a winery where they grow, produce and age natural wines in a traditional way.

Badenhorst Family Red Blend comes from small plots of old vines that grow on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain. They are cultivated using organic farming and no herbicides or pesticides. Instead, they use organic products and the yield is limited as much as possible to make sure the fruit expression is concentrated. When the grape reaches optimum ripeness, it is selected by hand and transported in small boxes.

In the winery, the Badenhorst Family Red Blend grapes are refrigerated for the first night. The next day they are transferred to concrete and wood tanks and “trampled” to begin spontaneous fermentation. It remains on lees for 6 months and after pressing it ages in used 4,000 litre barrels over 16 months.

Badenhorst Family Red Blend is the result of the Swartland Revolution, an innovative movement brought about by a new generation of South African winemakers who, through minimal intervention and maximum expression, have put this region in the international spotlight
2015 Badenhorst Family Red Blend 2015 is a concentrated red wine with intense aromas of black fruits, floral notes and spicy touches of pepper and liquorice. The palate is dense with well integrated and refreshing tannins and salty and red fruit flavours.
