About Badenhorst Sout Van Die Aarde Palomino

Adi Badenhorst, the grandson of the manager of Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine estate, has wine in his blood. After honing his skills in the Rhone Valley, New Zealand and Rustenberg, he bought a dilapidated winery in Cape Town with his cousin Hein and became a key player in the Swartland Revolution, a wine region that has been making waves in recent years. Based on an innovative and experimental style, their wines are made using old vines planted in chalky soil and influenced by coastal winds.

One of their wines is Badenhorst Sout Van Die Aarde Palomino, and is very original. Named “Sout Van Die Aarde” which means “salt of the earth” in African, they are highlighting its salty origins. This refers to both the salinity provided by the Palomino variety usually found in the wines of Jerez (Spain) as well as the saline influence of the Atlantic Ocean. The vines are cultivated using organic agriculture and the harvest is carried out manually when the grapes reach optimum ripeness. During vinification, the grapes ferment spontaneously with native yeasts and then the wine is aged in foudres for 12 months.

That means Badenhorst Sout Van Die Aarde Palomino is born from the wild Atlantic. A 100% saline wine that shows how well the new respectful and minimal intervention winemaking works in Swartland.

2019

Badenhorst Sout Van Die Aarde Palomino 2019 is an elegantly contoured white wine, exuding scents of white fruit, white blossoms, and saline nuances. On the palate, it is straightforward, vibrant, and vinous. A crisp wine that evokes memories of a sea breeze, it possesses a delightful texture from the first sip to the last.
