About Viña Real Bakeder
Medieval architecture, wineries, history and lots of wine (lots and lots of wine). If you had to capture the whole essence of Laguardia, it would undoubtedly fit in a bottle of Bakeder.
In Basque, Bakeder means beautiful peace. As a tribute to this village in La Rioja Alavesa (in northern Spain), this red wine is made from old vineyards aged over 30 years old and lying very close to the Camino Real. In fact, this strategic location is what inspired the name of the Viña Real winery, who make this red wine. The Bakeder grapes are grown in their own vineyards in San Ginés and Castejones, in a total area of 8.78 hectares between 550 and 600 metres above sea level. A simple glance at the base of the vine reveals clayey and calcareous soils, very poor in organic matter. Above them, theoretically, you should find an Atlantic climate (sunny and rainy); however, rainfall is scarce in this area. And this is mainly due to the proximity of the Cantabrian Mountains. In principle, this mountain range has two very clear influences: on the one hand, it acts as a barrier and protects the vineyards from the cold coming from the Cantabrian Sea; on the other hand, it is the main cause of the Foehn effect. This is a phenomenon that occurs when a humid air mass meets a mountain on its way. As a result, it is forced to rise. Here, at altitude, the water vapour condenses and falls as rain. After this the air mass continues on its way and descends the other side of the mountain, now completely dry and without humidity. And on this other side of the mountain is where the San Ginés and Castejones vineyards lie. Even so, the Rioja Alavesa, lying further north, is the denomination’s most humid area.
Bakeder is harvested by hand after an extensive selection in the vineyard. The bunches are quickly taken to the winery and unloaded into small stainless steel tanks where they undergo cold pre-fermentation maceration for about 48 hours. This allows the extraction of a large amount of flavours and aromas. After this time, the fermentation of Bakeder is allowed to begin. Depending on the vintage, this process will take more or less time, as tasting will determine when Bakeder is ready. The same happens with the subsequent maceration, where the wine is also left in contact with the skins, preparing for the year of aging that it will spend in French oak barrels.
It is clear that if Laguardia had a flavour, it would undoubtedly be that of Bakeder.
| 2020 | Viña Real Bakeder 2020 emerges as a dynamic and exuberant red wine. On the nose, it unfurls a spectrum of scents with an emphasis on fresh red fruits such as strawberries and cherries, augmented by a hint of ripe raspberries that beckon one to take an initial taste. On the palate, it upholds that youthful promise with a supple texture and a succulent profile that renders it effortlessly drinkable. Its gentle tannins and crisp finish render this wine a delightful choice for any occasion. |

| 2019 | Bakeder 2019 is a juicy red wine. Cherry red in colour, with great intensity and violet rims, this wine will make you fall in love over two things: firstly its aroma, which is very concentrated and intense, with red fruit, black fruit, liquorice, wood, spices and cocoa; secondly the taste, where it is structured and full-bodied, ample and with volume. The tannins are very fine and persistent, very meaty. Great bottle-aging potential. |
