About Balnaves Cabernet Merlot

Australia has some of the oldest soils in the world, many of which produce delicious wines. The best known Australian terroir is found in the Coonawarra area of South Australia’s southeastern region. It is the famous “Terra Rossa” soil. Stunningly beautiful, “Terra Rossa” is bright red earth on white limestone. Rich in calcium and iron oxides, it allows good drainage which means the roots of older vines penetrate the underlying limestone. Just like in the prestigious wine regions of St Emilion and Cote d'Or in France, this water supply contributes to the concentration of flavour and distinctive character of the wines. One of the wineries that has managed to appreciate and get the best out of their soils is Balnaves, a family business that began in 1970 and is one of the few wineries that it still independent in the Coonawarra wine region.

Their Balnaves Cabernet Merlot blend is a wine made mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These vines produce low yields of grapes that are highly concentrated in a chemical compound called a flavonoid, which is responsible for giving the wine elegantly intense blackcurrant flavours with minty, even chocolate mint touches. The vines are between 12 and 22 years old and extra water is applied to them using a central computer. The fruit is destemmed and sorted in the winery prior to fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, after which the wine ages for 12 months in new and used French oak barrels.

Balnaves Cabernet Merlot was made with the aim of producing high quality wines from the famous Terra Rossa soils, This wine is made by the Balnaves family vineyards in Coonawarra and reflects the unique character and flavours that this Australian wine region gives to the Cabernet grape.

2016

Balnaves Cabernet Merlot 2016 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of black and red fruits, notes of elderberry and hints of toasted oak. The palate is smooth, sweet and round. A medium-bodied wine with fine-grained tannins, integrated acidity and a very delicious fruity finish.
