About Barco del Corneta Tres Navíos Tinto

As we delve into La Seca, a quaint village in Valladolid within Castilla y León, it quickly becomes apparent that we are in a place steeped in wine culture. It is one of the most significant spots for verdejo, that white grape which here reaches its fullest expression. And if anyone knows how to masterfully work with verdejo, it is Barco del Corneta.

The house and winery are situated in the old apothecary of La Seca, nestled within a small estate that retains a traditional Castilian manor house, endowing the location with a unique atmosphere, blending tradition and serenity. The project's name is inspired by the surroundings of the Cantarranas estate: a pine forest encircling the vineyards and a brook with a nearby pond that is often dry today, though it once echoed with the croaking of frogs.

However, Barco del Corneta is not confined to verdejo. The Tres Navíos collection emerged from the curiosity of its creators, Félix and Beatriz, to explore nearby vineyards and regions, collaborating with vintners from Cigales. The aim was to highlight old vineyards where white and red varieties coexist, and to experiment with wines different from their usual verdejo. The area's land and climate are perfect for producing claretes, but they also possess everything necessary to craft red wines with character.

Tres Navíos Tinto is the direct result of this exploration. The main grape is tempranillo, accompanied by garnacha gris, garnacha tintorera, bobal, and other white varieties. Every step of the process is meticulously attended to. The grapes are hand-destemmed, ferment spontaneously, and macerate for three weeks. Subsequently, the wine ages for 15 months in used barrels of 500–600 litres. The result is an intense, balanced red wine brimming with character, reflecting both the vineyard's personality and the philosophy of its makers.

In essence, Tres Navíos Tinto is a wine that marries tradition and experimentation, with a focus on bringing out the best in each plot and each grape. It is a perfect example of how a small Castilian village can produce grand and distinctive wines, without forsaking its roots.
