About Bardos Villálvaro

Altitude and freshness have always been a hallmark of Vintae. This vision led the wine company to the Páramos de Corcos in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, where the vineyards are truly a matter of elevation: 10,000 hectares at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level. Not bad, right? After twenty years, this unconventional vision in the northeast of Spain has become a reality at the Bardos winery with reds like Bardos Villálvaro.

Straight from the village of Villálvaro (hence its name), a hamlet of San Esteban de Gormaz in Soria. If you feel brave enough to delve into this unorthodox interpretation of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, the viticulturists who cultivate the tempranillo, garnacha, and albillo grapes for this wine are even braver. The conditions are nothing short of extreme. At 960 metres above sea level, the climate is incredibly harsh and radical, with few hours of sunlight and a high risk of frost and hail. This is mainly because Villálvaro is strategically positioned between the Central and Iberian Systems, leaving it exposed to the clash of weather fronts. Here, and under these conditions, small plots endure where Bardos Villálvaro is born. In these vineyards—some with only two or three rows—80-year-old vines coexist with some pre-phylloxera vines that are 140 years old. The sandy, well-drained, and cool soils, with some gravel and clay-iron substrates, add the finishing touches to this red wine.

The harvest of Bardos Villálvaro is carried out manually in the second half of October. Immediately after picking, the grapes of Bardos Villálvaro are taken directly to the underground winery where they are processed and prepared for fermentation. Bardos Villálvaro is placed in 9,000-kilo vats where native yeasts will work their magic for three weeks at a temperature of 23°C. From here, Bardos Villálvaro is transferred to European oak barrels where it will rest for a year.

Undoubtedly one of the finest village wines you can find!
