About Basilisco Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG

Initially, it was the Phoenicians, followed by the Greeks, and then the Romans. None of the civilizations that settled in southern Italy overlooked the exceptional quality of the produce from Basilicata. The fruits, olives, grapes, and oil from this area have been nourishing the stomachs of the Empire and the rest of the country's inhabitants for centuries. However, at present despite the excellence of its products, this pivotal role remains unacknowledged. Yet, as the saying goes: Rome wasn't built in a day, and gradually, steps are being taken to amend this situation. A significant breakthrough occurred in 1971 when the Aglianico del Vulture variety achieved its own designation. This milestone encouraged numerous enterprises to view this terrain with newfound interest, perceiving a substantial business opportunity amidst its vines and vineyards. Such was the case for Feudi di San Gregorio, one of the major Italian wine groups, which expanded its operations in the region with the Azienda Agricola Basilisco.

The restoration of the lava cellars in the Shesh (excavated into the tuff itself) was the primary aim of this company, which cultivates its vineyards at the foot of the Vulture volcano. Specifically, the vines are situated on volcanic soil, at altitudes ranging from 450 to 600 metres, exposed to significant thermal fluctuations that bestow these wines with a distinctive profile. Pierpaolo Sirch will be responsible for overseeing both the work and the development of the vineyards. The denomination D.O.C.G. Aglianico del Vulture Superiore is reserved solely and exclusively for wines made entirely from aglianico grapes. After the harvest, these grapes are taken to the winery, where they are processed and vinified. In this phase, two crucial processes will occur: fermentation on one hand and maceration on the other, during which the wine will remain in contact with the skins for a period. Both operations will last between 25 and 30 days. This will lead to the ageing process, another critical moment for the wines of Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG, as this resting period will distinctly define the character of these reds. According to the regulations, wines of this denomination must undergo a minimum maturation period of 36 months, of which at least 12 must be in wood and another 12 in the bottle. Basilisco Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG more than meets these requirements, with over a year in both barrel and bottle.

Gradually, and with considerable effort, D.O.C.G. Aglianico del Vulture Superiore is gaining renown, assuming the place it historically deserves. Don't be left behind and sample Basilisco Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG. The latest sensation among Italian wines.
