About Bass Phillip Gamay
As the saying goes, "good things come to those who wait." This held true for Phillip Jones, who spent several years diligently working and researching, experimenting with different fermentations in small batches. Part of this research also extended to the vineyard, where he chose to cultivate gamay. This red variety is typically French, but it seems to adapt well to the diverse soils of Australia. Although not widely produced, the winery Bass Phillip is currently one of the few that makes wine with this variety. Bass Phillip Gamay is their creation.
In the field, Bass Phillip is entirely biodynamic. Under the guidance of Jean-Marie Fourrier (head winemaker), the entire team works biodynamically, respecting both the plants and the ecosystem surrounding the Leongatha vineyard. These vines are located in the southernmost part of the state of Victoria, in the Gippsland region. Essentially, the plant always dictates the pace and timing. The rest of the team merely listens, understands, and knows how to act at the right moment. It is worth noting that Bass Phillip is characterized by consistently working with low yields. The company is aware that this increases costs; however, this is not an issue, as it allows them to achieve the desired quality standards.
In the winery, the same philosophy prevails, with a focus on ensuring everything progresses correctly during the production of Bass Phillip Gamay. Generally, Bass Phillip is highly regarded for its single-varietal pinot noir; however, this gamay is equally impressive. Dare to explore the universe of Australian reds with Bass Phillip Gamay. The best proof that quality surpasses quantity.
