About Bernardo Estévez y Xico Mandín Terra
Masanobu Fukuoka was not just any farmer. This Japanese microbiologist, philosopher, and peasant devoted his life to challenging conventional wisdom about cultivation. He introduced a revolutionary concept: the less humans intervene, the healthier the land will be. His natural farming method is based on observing and understanding the rhythms of the ecosystem, working with it rather than against it. No ploughing, no chemical products, no aggressive pruning, no forcibly uprooting weeds. Do less, to allow more. Fukuoka asserted that "the ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings." Although he lived in Japan, his philosophy has taken root in distant places like Galicia, where two vintners have embraced his legacy as a way of life.
Bernardo Estévez and Xico Mandín don't make wine as taught in schools. They craft it as learned in the fields, by listening to the land and respecting its rhythms. Both Galicians, each with different paths but a shared vision: to create wines that convey what the soil, climate, and vines have to say, without embellishment or compromise. Fukuoka's natural farming aligns perfectly with their ethos. It is not merely a technique; it is an attitude. This philosophy gives rise to one of their most personal and coherent wines: Bernardo Estévez & Xico Mandín Terra
This is a white wine that follows roots rather than trends. It is crafted from three traditional varieties planted in the viña do Pousadoiro, a vineyard grafted by hand for over 30 years. The star is a grape as Galician as it is little known: the verdello. Accompanying it is the dona branca, also in various clones recovered from old vines, and finally, treixadura, which provides balance and structure. Everything ferments naturally, and the wine rests for nine months in oak barrels, unhurried and unaltered, refining texture and depth while retaining freshness.
Mineral, vibrant, full of nuances, Bernardo Estévez & Xico Mandín Terra is Galicia in a bottle. It is a testament that another way of cultivation is possible. As Fukuoka believed, cultivating with respect also cultivates those who practice it.
