Long before the vineyards draped the slopes of La Rioja, this land was inhabited by the Berones, a Celtic tribe with a warrior spirit deeply connected to their territory. Courageous and resilient, they fiercely defended their independence and a fertile land that was already a symbol of wealth.
Centuries later, that same brave spirit found its reflection in Beronia, the winery of the González Byass group in Rioja. Established in 1973 by a group of entrepreneurial friends and acquired by the González Byass group in 1982, Beronia took its name from that ancient warrior tribe as a reminder of the strength, passion, and connection to the land that define each of its wines.
The “Beronia style” is distinguished by extended ageing, especially for its reds, which account for 95% of the production. Each wine is a tribute to time and patience, to tradition and respect for the terroir. And now, with the same philosophy, they produce their verdejo Las Lías de Beronia, a profound and characterful white from old vines.
The grapes for Las Lías de Beronia come from selected plots in La Seca and Rueda, within the Finca La Perdiz. Their soils, rich in surface pebbles and deep clay, with limestone outcrops, contribute the minerality that defines the wine. The continental climate imparts aromatic intensity and freshness to each cluster.
Harvesting is done by hand to protect the fruit from unnecessary damage. Gentle whole-cluster pressing is conducted in an inert environment, preventing oxidations that could alter the purity of the aromas. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts in concrete tanks, enhancing contact with the lees and providing mouthfeel volume, and in 500-litre French oak barrels, adding complexity and tertiary nuances.
The 8-month ageing with periodic ‘batonnage’ rounds off an elegant, profound wine with personality, capable of conveying the history of the land and the legacy of those early inhabitants who, centuries ago, made La Rioja a place of indomitable character.
