About Bien de Altura El3mento

Acquiring a vineyard in Canarias could be deemed an insurmountable challenge. Yet, this hurdle does not deter Carmelo Peña from pursuing his dream: to revive abandoned vineyards and embark on his own venture. Leasing plots or purchasing grapes from local growers is the ingenious solution this Canarian has devised to achieve his goal. Along his journey, he has crafted several wines, all of them noteworthy. But if we must single out one, we emphatically recommend Bien de Altura El3mento. 
 
Listán Negro, Listán Prieto, and a selection of white grapes are the three essential pillars of this vibrant red wine. Its hallmark: the four months the must spends macerating with the skins. The outcome: a robust and thrilling red that fully captures the essence and potential of San Mateo, Carmelo's preferred region. Here, in the northwest of the island — at altitudes ranging from 1,100 to 1,460 meters — Carmelo is a true connoisseur, intimately familiar with the most intriguing nooks and plots. For Bien de Altura El3mento, the grapes hail from El Roque, a centenarian vineyard rooted in volcanic soils intermingled with fine clays. These igneous-origin soils are particularly noted for their excellent moisture retention, despite the scant rainfall throughout the year. This explains how the vines manage to survive in an almost desert-like environment, where temperatures remain high year-round and precipitation is notably absent. 
 
Furthermore, Carmelo is distinguished by his environmentally conscious and minimally invasive approach, both in the winery and the vineyard. This is especially remarkable given the steep incline of the vineyards. Despite the challenging terrain, all work is done by hand, utilizing a rail system during harvest to transport the grapes in boxes. Thus, the clusters of Bien de Altura El3mento are conveyed to the winery, where they are vinified with whole bunches. Bien de Altura El3mento is directly placed into clay amphorae, where it will remain for about four months. During this period, the indigenous yeasts have ample opportunity to perform their magic. Afterward, Bien de Altura El3mento is allowed to drain, yielding only the finest juice which will then be transferred to stainless steel tanks. There, it will rest until bottling (without filtration or clarification).
