Macabeu: Decántalo's New Virtual Sommelier at the Mobile World Congress
In the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings, the relationship between Frodo and Sam is undoubtedly one of the most profound and moving. Their bond transcends mere friendship; it is a connection so intense that, at times, it seems as though they can read each other's thoughts. In one of the most poignant scenes, when Frodo feels overwhelmed by the weight of his mission, Sam offers comfort with a simple yet powerful phrase: “You are not alone, Mr. Frodo.” This is the true magic of friendship: the ability to understand one another without the need for words, to know what the other needs with just a glance or a gesture.
In a world where genuine relationships seem increasingly rare and lives become more complicated, having such unconditional friendship is a gift. However, as with personal relationships, the world of wine can also be challenging for many. Stereotypes, doubts, and the fear of making mistakes deter many people from enjoying this fascinating universe. It is a shame because wine, like a good friendship, should be something accessible, without barriers, and for everyone.
At Decántalo, our aim is for everyone to enjoy wine easily and without feeling out of place. With this vision in mind, we have introduced the Smart Wine Bar by Decántalo at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, an innovative space where visitors, with the assistance of Macabeu, a virtual assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI), can enjoy the wine that best suits their tastes. Developed with the support of the Departament d’Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació de la Generalitat de Catalunya and the Institut Català de la Vinya i el Vi (INCAVI), this unique experience allows each user to receive personalised recommendations, making the selection of the perfect wine for every occasion more comfortable and enjoyable.
Macabeu is a virtual sommelier who, through a simple and friendly conversation, is capable of understanding the user's preferences and recommending the perfect wine for each occasion. Additionally, it provides information about the selected wine and generates a QR code that allows the recommendation to be redeemed for a glass of wine. After the experience, the user receives more information about the product directly in their email. With this system, Decántalo seeks to make the world of wine more accessible, eliminating the barriers that often create doubts and helping users choose the glass that will surely be a success.
