About Boekenhoutskloof Cap Maritime Pinot Noir

In 2020, Boekenhoutskloof was acclaimed as South Africa's premier winery by Platter's Wine Guide, and its Chief Winemaker Gottfried Mocke was distinguished as Tim Atkin MW's Winemaker of the Year 2020. Hence, with such prestigious accolades, we are in the presence of an esteemed vineyard. Indeed, this venture, established in 1993 by the audacious Marc Kent who set out in pursuit of the finest terroirs of the Western Cape South Coast in South Africa, produces wines that are truly exceptional and worthy of note.

One of the latest acquisitions by the team at Boekenhoutskloof is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, a mere 4 km from the ocean. Blessed with decomposed granite and sandstone soils, coupled with a cool and moderate climate, the pinot noir thrives here like nowhere else in the New World. First-rate grapes are cultivated with utmost reverence and are handpicked at the ideal point of ripeness. Once in the winery, they are meticulously selected, with 40% undergoing whole-cluster fermentation in concrete eggs. The remaining 60% is pressed, fermented, and aged in barrels (50% new) and in 600-liter foudres.

Considering that pinot noir is a varietal that does not fare well in hot climates, Boekenhoutskloof Cap Maritime Pinot Noir is a prime exemplar of the microclimate engendered by oceanic breezes. It is a full-bodied and graceful wine that reacquaints us with a splendid pinot noir from the southern hemisphere.

2019

Boekenhoutskloof Cap Maritime Pinot Noir 2019 is an intense red wine brimming with aromas of dark and red berries, complemented by hints of cocoa, black tea, and spice. On the palate, it is vibrant, fresh, and sophisticated. A rich wine with a brilliant fruity acidity, delicate tannins, and a prolonged, enduring finish.
