About Calalta Taiger
“Bois jaune, espagnin noir, navarre de la Dordogne, sans pareil, aleante, cannonaddu, canonazo, ranaccio, tintoria, tocai rosso, vrannaxia, vernatxa, lledoner, tinta menuda, tintella, granaccia…” might sound exotic, yet it will be more familiar than it seems.
Although the grape tai rosso may suggest a connection to something Thai, it is, in fact, another name for garnacha, as are all the aforementioned, and thus we could tally up to 100 synonyms for this highly popular variety. The red grape tai rosso is native to the Veneto (Italy) and is particularly emblematic of the Berici hills (Colli Berici), where Azienda Calalta has revived this vinous gem from obscurity.
Calalta is an organic winery nestled in the hills of Mussolente, surrounded by a landscape of olive trees, forests, meadows, and a pond that form a 16-hectare oasis of biodiversity. The vineyards, situated between 150 and 200 metres above sea level, stretch along meticulously cultivated slopes and are accessible on foot from the winery, allowing for direct and constant interaction with nature. Only the healthiest grapes reach the winery, where they are hand-selected and fermented exclusively with indigenous yeasts, preserving the authenticity and personality of each cluster and reflecting the genuine character of the territory.
Calalta Taiger is crafted from tai rosso grapes grown on clay soils rich in flint. The harvest is conducted manually, and the berries ferment in stainless steel using only indigenous yeasts. After maturing for 8 to 10 months in stainless steel, this wine offers a moderate alcohol content, balanced acidity, and crisp tannins that impart freshness and lightness. Fewer than 500 bottles are produced, making them a small treasure of the Veneto.
Calalta Taiger provides the opportunity to discover a unique and elegant expression of this authentic garnacha from the Veneto. And, although you may already know that tai rosso is merely another name for this popular international variety, seize the chance to indulge in a delightful wine while showcasing your oenological knowledge and surprising your friends by revealing that this grape, rescued from the brink of oblivion, is responsible for such an irresistible wine experience.
