About Campo Alle Comete Bolgheri Rosso Stupore

Campo Alle Comete Bolgheri Rosso Stupore was the first wine Campo Alle Comete introduced itself to the world with. Behind this project, which began in 2013, is the Tenute Capaldo group, one of the Italian wine giants that found the perfect place to expand their project in the D.O.C. Bolgheri Rosso.

Always eager for new plots, with the aim of recovering each area’s tradition and varieties, this winery, which until now only owned Feudi di San Gregorio in the province of Avellino, in Campania set up Campo Alle Comete. The group currently cultivates a total of 26 hectares in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci (northern Tuscany) where Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot are grown. A blend of all of them is used to make Campo Alle Comete Bolgheri Rosso Stupore. These varieties are vinified separately: from fermentation to aging (in new medium toasted barrels for one year), including maceration of the wine with the skins for three weeks.

This separation is mainly due to the fact that the grapes, most of which are planted in other parts of the world, reveal unique nuances here thanks to the area’s special terroir. This uniqueness is due to several factors. Firstly, the climate, influenced by the sea breezes that keep the area cool throughout the year, regulating temperatures during the summer; secondly, the wind (which keeps humidity levels low, preventing fungal diseases) and solar radiation (which hits the surface of the sea and is reflected onto the grapes); and finally, the very complex marine and alluvial origin soils (sandy clay loam, alkaline and deep), which give the wines many nuances.

After taking into account all these factors, the tasting team decides what percentages of each will make up the coupage of Campo Alle Comete Bolgheri Rosso Stupore. It is then bottled and spends a minimum of six months there. As the name suggests, it will leave you speechless...
