About Can Sumoi Sumoll-Garnatxa

We are all familiar with the story of David and Goliath, as recounted in the Bible. Even if we haven't read it, we understand its meaning well: it is the triumph of the small over the mighty. However, if we delve deeper into the subject, David had the advantage from the start. While the Philistine was adept at close combat, the human was a master of the sling, a long-range weapon. Thus, he managed to win by leveraging his strengths over those of his opponent.

In a similar vein, the historic winery Raventós i Blanc has successfully asserted itself generation after generation in the wine world. With its relentless commitment to preserving the estate's balance and enhancing the small appellation Conca del riu Anoia, it has garnered international acclaim with wines and sparkling wines of high mineral expression. It has now made another bold move with the revival of Can Sumoi, an estate of forest and vineyard in the Serra de Montmell, in the Baix Penedès (Catalonia), where natural wines are crafted devoid of artifices yet steeped in tradition.

To achieve this, Can Sumoi champions the sumoll, a variety on the brink of extinction in the Penedès and known as the “Mediterranean pinot noir.” In the wine Can Sumoi Sumoll-Garnatxa, it is accompanied by another indigenous variety, garnacha. These grapes come from vineyards situated at an altitude of 600 metres and are cultivated following biodynamic principles. In the winery, they undergo fermentation with minimal intervention in stainless steel tanks. Subsequently, the wine remains in stainless steel tanks for 12 months and is finally bottled without stabilisation, filtration, or the addition of any oenological products.

The result is Can Sumoi Sumoll-Garnatxa, a high-altitude natural red wine from Penedès, characterised by its strong Mediterranean character and minimal intervention.

Can Sumoi Sumoll-Garnatxa 2023 exhibits an alluring cherry hue with a ruby rim and a delicate tear. On the nose, it is distinguished by an explosion of red fruits such as strawberries and cherries, accompanied by floral notes and a hint of wild herbs. Upon aeration, fresh citrus notes emerge, adding a lively character. On the palate, it is agile and crisp, with outstanding acidity that accentuates the memories of ripe red fruits and a long, invigorating finish. It is a fresh and vibrant wine.
