About Cantina Orsogna Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano

In 1964, a group of 35 oenologists from Abruzzo, in central Italy, came together to form a cooperative. This union, which was later joined by many others, proved to be the perfect solution for small producers to gain strength. Today, sixty years later, the project is more vibrant than ever with 450 members making Cantina Orsogna one of the most significant cooperatives in the region. Not only does it safeguard the labour and economic rights of those who work the land, but it also preserves the environmental heritage of the territory. Initially, the focus was on organic and ecological farming; now, the emphasis is on biodynamics and more natural methods, incorporating certifications and low-impact techniques. Under these principles, the red wine Cantina Orsogna Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano is crafted.

The Peligna Valley, situated right in the heart of the peninsula, is where the Montepulciano grapes used to produce this wine are grown. Specifically, this indigenous variety is the primary grape cultivated in this area, where wine remains a true religion. The earliest records from this region date back to the mid-18th century, spreading to other mountainous and even coastal areas. The grape industry is the main economic activity in the region, becoming especially robust after World War II, playing a crucial role in the post-war economic recovery. The grapes for Cantina Orsogna Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano are grown at an altitude of 440 meters above sea level, 16 km from the Adriatic Sea and another 16 km from the Maiella Massif in the central Apennines. Both the maritime air masses and the temperature contrasts from the mountains influence the ripening of the clusters, achieving a perfect balance. It is worth noting that Cantina Orsogna Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano is cultivated using the pergola method, a traditional training system in the area where the vines are arranged on horizontal wire trellises. Given this arrangement, all the work at Cantina Orsogna is carried out manually.

In the winery, there is no room for machinery either, as Cantina Orsogna Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano ferments spontaneously with native yeasts, without adding any sulphates or nutrients. Cantina Orsogna Lunaria Coste di Moro Montepulciano will also rest for a time in cement tanks and bottles until it is finally ready to be bottled without any filtration or clarification.
