About Carlos Sánchez 1er Cru Los Montes Bellos del Buradòn

A “micro winemaker” is a small producer or winery owner who operates on a very small scale compared to larger, commercial wineries. These “micro winemakers” tend to focus on producing high quality, artisan wines, often using traditional viticulture and winemaking practices. With a strong focus on terroir, i.e. how soil characteristics, climate and geographic location influence the taste and character of their wines, they often produce wines in distinct regions that reflect the unique features of each of the specific locations. Carlos Sánchez is a restless explorer who has made his way in different Spanish regions, starting in the Sierra de Gredos (Madrid) and expanding his horizons into the heart of the Sonsierra (Rioja).

In this latter region, Carlos Sánchez 1er Cru Los Montes Bellos del Buradòn is born, a coupage made from old Tempranillo and Viura vines in vineyards located in Labastida at 480 metres above sea level. The vines were planted in 1977 on sandy clay-limestone soil and cultivated following biodynamic principles. The grapes are harvested by hand and, once in the winery, they undergo daily crushing and pigéage. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration lasts 30 days and malolactic fermentation takes place in 500 litre barrels where the wine remains for 14 months before bottling, without filtering or stabilising.

With the name of the municipality on the label, Carlos Sánchez 1er Cru Los Montes Bellos del Buradòn is a premier cru. A coupage whose aesthetics are reminiscent of a 1962 label from the legendary Burgundy producer Henri Jayer, to promote the concept of vinification by plot that this “micro winemaker” so strongly advocates in the D.O.Ca Rioja.

 

2021

Carlos Sánchez 1er Cru Los Montes Bellos del Buradòn 2021 is a concentrated red wine with aromas of ripe black fruit, herbal notes and hints of spice and oak. The palate is unctuous, fruity and well structured. A medium-bodied wine with fine tannins, refreshing acidity and a long finish with spicy hints.
