Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Cartago Paraje del Pozo is a red wine crafted by Bodegas y Viñedos San Román in Villaester, D.O. Toro.

At the helm of this winery is Mariano García, a renowned oenologist celebrated for his creation of Mauro and his tenure at the prestigious Vega Sicilia winery, where he was responsible for crafting 30 vintages of their legendary wines.

Bodegas y Viñedos San Román boasts 100 hectares of vineyards in Toro, predominantly planted with the Tinta de Toro and Garnacha varieties, spread across various plots between Villaester and San Román de Hornija. All their vineyards are organically certified, although this certification is not applied to any of their wines. Their philosophy is to produce wines that harness the immense potential of the soil and the distinctive expression of this historic red wine region.

Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Cartago Paraje del Pozo is a wine made with Tinta de Toro and 10% of other more aromatic varieties, sourced from Cartago, a natural setting dominated by meadows and pine forests along the banks of the Duero River in the municipality of Castronuño. Within this area lies the El Pozo estate, a 5-hectare plot planted in the 1970s on ungrafted vines, situated at an altitude of 700 metres on very sandy soils with deep clay and minimal organic matter.

The harvest is conducted manually with grape selection in the vineyard itself. Once at the winery, all grapes are destemmed, and after a gentle crushing, alcoholic fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasts for two weeks. It undergoes ageing for 36 months in both new and used French oak barrels.

2020 Bodegas y Viñedos San Román Cartago Paraje del Pozo 2020 is a true tribute to Tinta de Toro. Its nearly black hue heralds an intense experience. On the nose, it reveals alluring notes of ripe black fruits such as blackberry and plum, accompanied by spicy and smoky hints that evoke the elegance of oak. On the palate, it is powerful and well-structured, with impressively fine tannins that temper the impact of the alcohol and impart a sensation of refined texture. Although its robust structure suggests great ageing potential, allowing it to rest in the bottle will enhance its complexity. A wine for those seeking depth, character, and a memorable experience.
