About Catena Chardonnay

Over time, and after several decades of research, Nicolás Catena discovered the secret to excellence: planting the right variety in the right place. Everything in its right place, arranged according to the terroir and the components of each soil. Thanks to this methodology and philosophy, which is still used today, there is room for other grapes, like Chardonnay, in Malbec country. And it is with this variety that Catena Chardonnay is made at this winery, a very interesting single-variety wine, a blend of grapes from the best areas of Mendoza, in Argentina, at the foot of the Alps, where the family cultivates its vineyards at high altitude, and as you ascend the slopes, the temperature drops one degree and the hours of daylight increase, resulting in great contrasts between day and night. Thanks to this, the grapes ripen slowly and properly, developing less acidity.

Similarly, after many years of research, Laura Catena (daughter of Nicolás Catena and fourth generation) discovered that vines at high altitude developed more polyphenols than those grown at lower altitudes. These elements, present in the grapes and in the cluster, ensure that the wine can withstand the long aging process and stay in good condition. For Catena Chardonnay, this time varies between 6 and 8 months in French oak barrels (chosen according to the vineyard and vintage) on its lees. It also ferments here (and only some of the harvest also undergoes malolactic fermentation). Finally, Catena Chardonnay is bottled unfiltered and unclarified.

Catena Chardonnay 2023 is an aromatic white wine with pronounced notes of lemon, orange peel, and peach on the nose. On the palate, it is elegant and refreshing, with a marked acidity that balances beautifully with a pleasant creaminess.
