About Horta Colomer Vi de Paratge Blanc

When it comes to classifying wines, every "teacher has their own book" and each appellation has its way of highlighting the characteristics of its wines. However, more and more producers are striving to reflect the uniqueness of their soils and the identity of their vineyards. This is demonstrated by DOQ Priorat, one of Spain's premier appellations, with its new pyramid classification system "Els noms de la terra" (The names of the land in Catalan), inspired by Burgundy. A system where the quality and character of the wine are closely tied to its geographical origin and the age of its vines.

The pyramid operates as follows: at the base, we find the wines of the DOCa, representative of the region, and as we ascend, the wines reflect increasingly specific plots and vineyards: Vi de Vila (village wine), Vi de Paratge (site-specific wine), Vinya Classificada, and Gran Vinya Classificada. This hierarchy allows for the highlighting of unique soils, such as the licorella, and old vines of garnacha and cariñena, which impart mineral richness, complexity, and personality to the wines.

A perfect example of Vi de Paratge is Horta Colomer Vi de Paratge Blanc, a top-tier white wine with limited production. This gem from DOQ Priorat originates from specific plots with slate soils and unique microclimates, where the old vines strive to fully express the essence of the terroir.

Horta Colomer Vi de Paratge combines in equal proportions cariñena blanca and cariñena gris (grafted red cariñena), Mediterranean varieties undergoing revival that were planted in 1996. The grapes are destemmed and fermented for 3 weeks in 500-litre ceramic jars, then rested for another three months in the same vessels, gaining complexity and freshness without losing the purity of the terroir.

Thus, this classification not only organizes the wines by quality and specificity but also tells the story of each vineyard, each soil, and each microclimate. Because in the end, drinking Horta Colomer Vi de Paratge Blanc is not just about enjoying a fine wine; it is about savoring the land that gave it birth.
