About Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas

Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas is a single-variety Albariño white wine produced by Gerardo Méndez in the D.O. Rías Baixas.

The Gerardo Méndez winery was founded in 1975 through a passion for the Albariño native variety, a passion that the winemaker himself expressed by creating the Rías Baixas denomination. They now cultivate a total of 5 hectares of vineyards that lie in the highest part of Rías Baixas. These are limited, artisan productions.

Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas comes from very old vines, some of which are around 200 years old. The vines spread over less than one hectare of land, on sandy soils with a granitic rock bed. From these vines they only produce between 5,000 and 9,000 litres, depending on the vintage. 10% of the grapes are left on the vine so that they reach botrytis noble state, and the harvest is completely manual.

In the winery, the grapes are destemmed and then undergo cold film maceration. Then the Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas grapes are pressed and the must ferments using the ‘pie de cuba’ method. Finally the wine rests on its own fine lees in stainless steel tanks for about 12 months.

Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas is a very elegant white wine with surprising complexity and depth. A small production from one estate that is smaller then one hectare and only made in years when the grapes are in the best condition.
2023 Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas 2023 is a gem among Albariños, distinguished by its brilliance and freshness. Bringing the glass to the nose reveals delicate notes of green apple and citrus, such as lemon, accompanied by a subtle saline touch that evokes its Atlantic origin. On the palate, its profile is precise and sharp, with vibrant acidity that provides a defined structure and a clean, prolonged finish. The 2023 vintage offers exceptional balance, standing out for its elegance and austerity. Perfect for those who appreciate fresh and well-structured wines, with the promise of evolving beautifully over time.
2018 Do Ferreiro Cepas Vellas 2018 is an aromatic white wine with intense fruity notes of apple, tropical fruit and citrus. It reveals floral and mineral notes with a saline background. On the palate it is lingering, dense and silky. The acidity makes the finish fresh, balanced and saline.
2010 Great. very elegant and refined white wine from the Rias Baixas. Wine with a very good, wide and bulky attack. It shows a long, dense and silky mid palate, with the notes of fruit and floral aromas previously found in the nose and an intense minerality. Its intense balsamic aromas, together with its good acidity, provides this wine with a nice freshness and a great balance. Long and very persistent aftertaste with a surprising saline hint.  One of the greatest wines of Albariño, that will seduce us with its elegance, complexity and finesse. A pleasure.

Intense straw yellow colour with golden reflections. Clean and bright wine with glyceric tears.

Intense aromas that seduce us from the beginning. Initially, its intense notes of fruit are released with outstanding citrus aromas and hints of ripe tropical fruits. After swirling the glass, some delicate floral aromas surprise us and stay in the background, giving way to an elegant and intense minerality. A background reminiscent of saline touches rounds out this wine.
2009 Voluminous and intense attack. The citric, floral and mineral notes found in the nose are released again in the mouth with an amazing touch of balsamic (eucalyptus). Silky and creamy mid palate with a great acidity. A deep wine with a great and very persistent finish. A very elegant and subtle white wine from the Rias Baixas. A wine to enjoy.

Albariño with an impressive nose. Elegant and intense nose with notes of fruit (citrus and tropical) at center stage. Amazing minerality, with lots of arômas of the terroir, saline touches and a delicate floral background. A real pleasure.
