About Château Carbonnieux Blanc

Wine has attracted people since time immemorial and has been linked to a wide range of civilisations throughout history. In medieval times, it was the monasteries that were the true providers of wine. When the monks, the main producers, included wine in their liturgies as a symbol of the Blood of Christ, this drink went from being consumed only by the upper social classes to being consumed by all people. Wine became the most significant beverage. So much so that St. Benedict himself, the founding monk of the Benedictines, states in his “Regula Monasteriorum” (rule of the monasteries) in the year 540 that you can drink up to one “Hemina” of wine a day. That is 18 litres to us. So, the monasteries were the main pioneers of wine at that time and were the ones who were most concerned about its care and passing it on. There are many Châteaus that have long been owned by Benedictine monks. One of them, today’s Château Carbonnieux, a 50-hectare estate in the heart of Pessac-Léognan was preserved for years and years by the nearby Abbey of Sainte-Croixe. It is thanks to these Benedictine monks and the great Ferron and Bouchereau families that the Château Carbonnieux wines have made a name for themselves that is still very well thought of today under the current owners, the Perrin family.

Their Château Carbonnieux Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon from the estate. These are old vines planted on the splendid clay, limestone and gravel slopes of the Garonne River and one of the first to receive the Graves classification. An exceptional composition from which only the best local white wines can be produced. To this end, respectful agriculture is practiced where chemical insecticides, herbicides and acaricides are prohibited and replaced by organic methods that respect biodiversity and stimulate the vine’s natural defenses. The grapes are harvested by hand and, once in the winery, the bunches are carefully selected to be pressed with care and limiting the use of sulphur. After 3-4 days of resting in tanks at a low temperature, fermentation continues in barrels (30% new) in lots selected by to their plot of origin for 10 months.

Meaty, fresh and unctuous, Château Carbonnieux Blanc is the best representation of Bordeaux’s quality white wines. A best-seller now made by brothers Eric and Philibert Perrin, it proudly bears the mark of the great Benedictine legacy.
