About Château de Fieuzal

The Bordeaux wine region has had a significant number of vineyards for many centuries, some with ancient ecclesiastical origins and, in general, predating the now more famous châteaux of the Médoc. However, at Château de Fieuzal, a property that has seen many centuries, and owners pass by, the vineyard was a much more recent addition. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that it was gradually transformed into an agricultural estate to become one of the remarkable estates of Pessac-Léognan and part of the 1959 Graves classification. Although there aren’t many details about the owners during this transformation, it seems that in the early part of the century it was owned by the Fieuzal family, hence the current name. Fieuzal sold the property to the Griffon family, who divided the property, and one of the Griffon brothers took advantage of his position as Pope Leo XIII’s consul in Bordeaux to market the wine. In 1851 Griffon also relinquished possession of the estate, selling it to Abel Ricard, a gentleman who already had considerable interests in the region, including Domaine de Chevalier and Château Malartic-Lagravière. However, despite his passion for wine, his tenure saw phylloxera, powdery mildew, a world war and an economic depression which inevitably led to the decline of the estate. It was not until his daughter Odette and her husband Eric Bocké took over after the war that the rebirth of Fieuzal began, restoring the ruined house and replanting the vineyard. Today Château de Fieuzal is owned by Brenda and Lochlann Quinn, a wine-loving Irish couple who, having hired Stephen Carrier as winemaker and Hubert de Bouärd as consultant, are working to preserve the essence of Graves wine.

This is clear to see in their eponymous Château de Fieuzal wine. A deliciously complex blend of multiple grape varieties that authentically expresses the incredible diversity of the vineyard. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, each bottle allows us to share the unique energy of Fieuzal. Through respectful agriculture, the rich and complex terroir is reflected and, once the grapes reach optimum ripeness, they are harvested and selected by hand. In the winery, vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with a 12-day maceration, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for about 12 months before being bottled.

The result is Château de Fieuzal, a red wine with a distinctive charm that is inextricably linked to the place it is made. Elegance, expressiveness and dynamism that has the intriguing ability to capture attention throughout its long life.
