About Château Fombrauge

No connection to the world of wine. Neither his family nor any ties linked him to Bordeaux. Completely self-taught – and never giving up – Bernard Magrez has managed to become one of the key figures in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru AOC. He currently owns Château Fombrauge, an estate he manages along with other properties located in neighbouring regions that have made him the sole owner of four Grands Crus Classés in Bordeaux.

A distinctive feature of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru AOC wines is their blending, or coupage, where different grape varieties are used to achieve the final result. And Château Fombrauge handles this centuries-old task with great care. Here, as in the rest of the appellation, they work mainly with merlot, the undisputed queen of the area, and cabernet franc, two grapes that produce very elegant wines with a lot of depth. In particular, (cold) clay is the best soil for merlot to develop its full potential. As for cabernet franc, it is more comfortable in warmer soils, such as limestone. Both types are abundant at Château Fombrauge, where the mix of soils is a real spectacle. At Château Fombrauge, each of the vineyards, which are worked in the traditional manner, has an identity card so that they can be identified at all times, worked on individually and monitored by drone.

In short, Château Fombrauge is a very special wine that is made with special care and attention to detail. The grapes are meticulously selected – depending on the variety and plot – and are harvested by hand in small boxes. After destemming and before fermentation, Château Fombrauge is macerated. This phase, where the must remains in contact with the skins, lasts between four and eight days. After this time, Château Fombrauge is racked by gravity to the fermentation tanks (wood, stainless steel or concrete), where the fundamental process takes place. Once finished, Château Fombrauge is aged for 16 months, during which time it is polished and perfected.

Bernard Magrez is currently one of the most interesting figures in France. From a mere errand boy to owning a private jet that allows him to visit each of his vineyards with little effort. According to him, the secret is to work hard and never give up. We will have to listen to him, take note and drink many glasses of Château Fombrauge (without overdoing it, of course).
