About Château Pédesclaux

Perhaps a few years ago, hearing the name Château Pédesclaux would have come as no surprise. However, nowadays, talking about this Bordeaux winery (located in the A.O.C. Pauillac), means mentioning one of the most renowned producers in the area. Those responsible for this are the Lorenzetti family who acquired the estate in 2009. The man behind this was Jacky Lorenzetti, founder of Foncia estate agents, who literally went wine crazy after his time at hotel school in Lausanne. There was also no shortage of people cheering him on. By his side was his wife, François, who was born in the Gironde and is the granddaughter of winegrowers.

So the couple knew what they were getting into when they bought these 50 hectares in the heart of the A.O.C. Pauillac. In particular, this area, located on the left bank of Bordeaux, is considered by experts to be the place for producers par excellence. Less than 5% of its 1,213 hectares are outside the Official Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855 (created by order of Napoleon III on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition in Paris). The rest are spread across the five categories of this ranking (most of them within the cinquième cru), where wines of great quality are made. This is where Château Pédesclaux finds itself, producing a red wine of the same name from varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Part of the magic of the A.O.C. Pauillac lies in its deep gravelly soils, with a mix of clay and limestone. On this land grows vineyards, mostly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, where organic and biodynamic cultivation has been used since 2012. Today the vineyards are under the supervision of a team of winegrowers, led by Manon Lorenzetti (the couple’s daughter), whose aim remains to work the land in a respectful way. This respect is maintained in the winery, where the wine is worked by gravity. Each plot, which has been thoroughly selected, is harvested separately and the grapes undergo a pre-fermentation maceration. This will be the first step of a journey where the grapes will be thoroughly cared for at all times. When they reach the winery, the grapes are again selected on a sorting table, and from there they are transferred to 116 stainless steel truncated stainless steel vats. Next to them there will also be four other vats that go up and down (like a lift), and these are used to carry out the racking smoothly, without the wine being drawn off or put in at height. This is mainly because at Château Pédesclaux there is no place for pumping over, because the wine is racked and refreshed using this novel system.

Finally, after blending, Château Pédesclaux is transferred to French oak barrels (40% of which are new), where it is aged for 16 months. After this, Château Pédesclaux will have become one of the best wines of the A.O.C. Pauillac.
