About Clos de l'Obac

Those knowledgeable about wine are aware of the resurgence of Priorat in Catalonia, a region that transitioned from being a forgotten area of vineyards and hazelnut groves to one of the most thrilling places on the global wine scene. It all began in the 1980s, when a group of enterprising vintners decided to change that narrative. Among them, Carles Pastrana and Mariona Jarque played a pivotal role. From Gratallops, they were active participants in this group that would revolutionise Priorat, marking a turning point with their first vintage in 1989. Thanks to their vision and determination, the region managed to secure a place on the finest wine lists worldwide.

Thirty years later, alongside their children Guillem and Iona, the Pastrana-Jarque family has solidified their family venture Clos de l’Obac. With a clear philosophy of "estate wines," each bottle produced comes exclusively from grapes grown in their own vineyards, without reliance on external grapes. In essence, each vineyard and each cluster is part of the identity of their wines.

Their iconic Clos de l’Obac perfectly embodies this philosophy. A blend that is repeated each year since 1989, composed of Grenache (35%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Syrah (10%), Merlot (10%), and Carignan (10%). The Grenaches, Carignans, and Cabernets come from old bush vines between 50 and 80 years old, while the rest of the vineyards average 25 years. The alcoholic fermentation is carried out at a controlled temperature of 24 to 28°C for 15 days, followed by a 31-day maceration with the skins. The ageing in new French oak barrels lasts 12 months, and then the wine rests in the bottle until it is ready to be enjoyed. Therefore, each vintage of Clos de l’Obac typically reaches the market after 10 years, ensuring that each sip reflects the essence of Priorat.

Clos de l’Obac combines strength and elegance, power and subtlety, tradition and character. It is a wine that not only reflects a region but also the patience, care, and passion of those who transformed a forgotten corner into a global benchmark.

2012

Clos de l'Obac 2012 is an expressive and extraordinary red wine. It is well-structured and robust, featuring an intense cherry hue with violet edges and a deep colour intensity. The bouquet is pronounced, with nuances of dark fruit, spices, licorice, and aromatic herbs set against a mineral backdrop. On the palate, it is warm and enveloping, flavorful and silky, vigorous and full-bodied. The finish is extensive and enduring.

2004 The mouth-feel is enveloping, complex, highly structured, long and persistent with notes of spices and cocoa.

A dark cherry colour, with violet edges, very clean and transparent.

On the nose, it has sweet notes of ripe, dark fruits, plums, blackberries and cherries; touches of mineral that come from the "llicorella" (Priorat Slate).
