About Clos des Fées Grenache Blanc Vieilles Vignes

Sommelier, restaurateur and wine and food journalist, Hervé Bizeul swapped the hectic Parisian life for a slow and peaceful life in the countryside. It all started when he decided to make his own wines and in 1998, with his wife Claudine, he bought 8 hectares of land in the Agly valley in Roussillon (France). Since then, all of his experience combined with advice from great friends led him to produce a memorable first vintage. Gentle but rigorous, with the precision of a Swiss watchmaker, he has since made his Clos des Fées winery one of the most remarkable in the Pays des Côtes Catalanes denomination.

One of his wines is Clos des Fées Grenache Blanc Vieilles Vignes, which is made from Garnacha Blanca and Garnacha Gris grapes from old vines, some of which are over 100 years old. These plots are spread throughout the valley and have clay soils over bedrock, with the vines sharing their space with holm oaks and garrigues. There is significant influence from the Tramuntana wind and the Mediterranean sea breeze, and the vines are cultivated using traditional agriculture with manual harvesting and maximum attention to detail. When the grapes reach the winery, they are pneumatically pressed at low pressure. Then, the Garnacha Blanca grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks and the Garnacha Gris ferments in old barrels. Finally, this cuvée ages on its lees for 5 to 8 months in oak barrels and is refined in the bottle.

The result is magical. Clos des Fées Grenache Blanc Vieilles Vignes is a refined, fresh and sumptuous wine. A wine of the “fairies” (fées is French for fairies) that undoubtedly reflects the mysterious charm of the place and the colourful character of this multifaceted winegrower.

2019

Clos des Fées Grenache Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2019 is a creamy white wine with a wonderful bouquet of citrus aromas, notes of crisp apples and floral nuances. On the palate it is full-bodied, rich and unctuous. A wine with a pleasant extract sweetness and a fresh acidic structure. It develops very well in the bottle after aging 3 to 6 years.
