About Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva

Behind every great cava lies a remarkable story. This is the tale of Anna de Codorníu, a pioneering woman — far ahead of her time — who did not hesitate to abandon her privileged position to rebuild the family winery. Her courage and bravery lend their name to Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva.
 
From the outset, life was challenging for Anna de Codorníu. Born in 1645, the daughter of Joan Felip Codorníu and María Rosell, two of Catalonia's largest landowners from the high aristocracy. Her home, Mas Codorníu, was one of the principal estates in Penedès, which was soon plundered by troops during the Thirty Years' War (which pitted Spain against France from 1618 to 1648) and the Guerra dels Segadors (from 1640 to 1659). During both conflicts, this estate, dedicated to wine production, became a resting place for soldiers and officers, to the point of being completely burned down. It was not until she grew up and married her husband, Miguel Raventós (another landowner in the area), that Anna decided to set aside her status to devote herself to the land and revive the family business. Stone by stone, with her own hands, Anna rebuilt the ruined house, successfully reviving one of Spain's strongest companies today.
 
An undeniable symbol of empowerment and effort, the brand has not hesitated to use her name for a selection of cavas, among which is Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva, a sparkling wine crafted from chardonnay, parellada, macabeo, and xarel·lo, with an ageing period of over 15 months. 
 
The grapes for Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva come from various plots within the DO Cava. While the chardonnay hails from vineyards near Lleida (where the climate is more continental), the other varieties are sourced from selected vineyards in Penedès. Regardless of the location, the process followed is always the same: harvesting occurs when each variety reaches its optimal ripeness, then it is swiftly transported to the winery, where the grapes are destemmed and finally pressed to obtain the must. Once the grape juice is obtained, Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva is transferred to stainless steel tanks where it ferments at a controlled temperature using selected yeasts. Once the different wines are obtained, the various varieties of Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva are blended and bottled. This step is crucial, as the liqueur de tirage (a mixture of sugar and yeast) is also added, and it is left to rest in underground cellars until the second fermentation occurs. However, the journey of Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva does not end here, as the wine will remain in contact with its lees (dead yeast) for another 15 months until the moment of disgorging, where the lees will be removed. Finally, before being released for sale, Anna de Codorníu Blanc de Blancs Reserva is topped up with liqueur d'expédition (to compensate for the loss of liquid), ultimately achieving a rounded, creamy sparkling wine with profound aromas.
