Write this name down and don’t forget it!: Comtesse de Chérisey Puligny-Montrachet 1er. Cru Hameau de Blagny. Yes, we know it’s a bit long, but if you are a Burgundy lover we can assure you that this white will not disappoint.
At the gates of the small village of Blagny, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune (in the south of the Côte d'Or), this white wine is made on lees and aged in barrels made from the wood taken from the estate itself, the Domaine Comtesse de Chérisey. This is a discreet winery run by Hélène and Laurent Martelet, a married couple and the latest generation of a family that has been running this business since 1811. Their story began in 1996 when they planted their first vineyard together in the Genelotte. And this was just the beginning. Two years later, they took up residence on the estate, between Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, which has a wide variety of soils mixed across the nine hectares that make up the domain. Their Comtesse de Chérisey Puligny-Montrachet 1.er. Cru Hameau de Blagny wine starts life in the part closest to the A.O.C. Puligny-Montrachet, where the soils are very poor and shallow. The vineyards in this area are old, between 20 and 60 years, and face very harsh and extreme climates every day, but the plant is able overcome these adversities and provide its best fruit. Undoubtedly, it’s the vine that rules. The Martelet’s and their team simply listen to its needs and manage the work in the vineyard, which is always organic.
Comtesse de Chérisey Puligny-Montrachet 1er. Cru Hameau de Blagny ferments spontaneously and is aged on the lees in barrels (made from wood taken from the estate’s trees). Finally, this white wine is bottled, unfiltered and unclarified. A great wine that can go unnoticed but that no Burgundy lover should miss.
