About Coto de Gomariz Paxaradas

It is often said that "Galicians are everywhere", and it's no exaggeration. Galicia, a land of sea and mountains, has historically also been a land of emigration. From the 19th century and much of the 20th, thousands of Galicians crossed the ocean heading to America—Argentina, Cuba, Uruguay, Mexico, Venezuela…—and also to Europe, seeking a future in countries such as Switzerland, Germany, or the United Kingdom. Wherever they arrived, they quickly founded associations, recreated their customs, and established a piece of Galicia far from home. Hence, this saying was born, as true as it is endearing.

One of those Galicians who left and returned was Ricardo Carreiro Ameijeiras (Caco). Like many others, he emigrated to South America in the seventies, but upon returning, he had a clear idea: to fulfill a dream. He wanted to restore the prestige of Gomariz as a historic vineyard and demonstrate that from his land, wines recognized worldwide could be produced. Today, his son Ricardo continues the winemaking legacy under the name Coto de Gomariz.

Among their treasures, we find Coto de Gomariz Paxaradas, an orange wine that defies conventions. It originates from soils of granitic sands, clays, and schists, from terraces and gentle slopes cultivated sustainably and free of toxic chemicals. It is 100% treixadura, the flagship grape of Ribeiro, vinified in the style of ancient orange wines: skin maceration for two weeks, spontaneous fermentation, and a year's aging on its fine lees. The result is a wine full of nuances, with a personality distinct from other whites, and a golden color that speaks for itself.

And the name? "Paxaradas" in Galician literally means "many birds," but colloquially it is used to refer to an occurrence or action of little importance. And indeed, this wine was born almost by chance, a sort of "paxarada" of the winery… until they tasted it and realized they had discovered something unique.

Because that is how Galicians are; they leave, return, reinvent, and surprise. And in the end, they confirm that yes, Galicians are everywhere… even in every sip of Coto de Gomariz Paxaradas, a wine as unexpected as it is authentic, born almost by chance and transformed into one of the most singular gems of Ribeiro.
