About Courbet Côtes du Jura Trousseau Violette
Over the past five decades, the rural landscape has witnessed a significant transformation in the agricultural estate model, particularly those dedicated to viticulture. Many of these estates, which initially embraced mixed farming with vines, cereals, and livestock, have gradually evolved to specialize solely in grape cultivation and winemaking. This shift from mixed farming to specialization reflects the pursuit of excellence in wine production. One such estate is Domaine Courbet, which, although established in 1869, did not become a winery until Jean-Marie Courbet took the helm and transformed it into one of the most sought-after in the industry due to the exceptional quality of its wines. Since 2011, his son Damien continues the legacy with 7.5 hectares of privately-owned vineyards located on the slopes of the renowned village of Château-Chalon, within the AOC Côtes du Jura (France). By working with the region's four most emblematic grape varieties—trousseau, savagnin, poulsard, and chardonnay—there is no doubt that he is a benchmark for Jura wines.
One of their most emblematic cuvées is Courbet Côtes du Jura Trousseau Violette, a red wine named after his daughter Violette, crafted from old vineyards planted between 1999 and 2004. Specifically, it comes from two plots with clayey and limestone soils where the trousseau variety is cultivated biodynamically. The harvest is done by hand, and once at the winery, the grapes are manually destemmed, leaving a small portion in clusters. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in barrels, followed by aging for 12 months in the same vessels. Finally, it is bottled unclarified, unfiltered, and with a minimal addition of sulfur dioxide (between 20 and 30 ppm).
The outcome is remarkable, with a concentration and depth of fruit that are evident in every sip of Courbet Côtes du Jura Trousseau Violette. A sensory experience that stands out for its quality and sophistication, perfectly embodying the Jura region.
