About D'Arenberg Custodian Grenache

Grenache, which comes from Spain, was never very popular in Australia. Traditionally this variety, which grows in Spain and Sardinia, has always taken second place in this country. Even in the 1980s, the government launched a project to extract these vines, where they paid producers to pull them up. Fortunately, however, there is always someone who holds onto their principles, without succumbing to these types of demands. D'Arenberg, a winery located in McLaren Vale was one of those, earning the nickname ‘Custodian of Grenache’. And d'Arenberg Custodian Grenache is a red wine that backs it up.

Today d'Arneberg, one of the first wineries in the area run by the Osborn family, owns almost a third of the old Grenache in the McLaren Vale (in South Australia, 30 minutes from the city of Adelaide). These vineyards are in addition to the other vineyards that the family owns, dating back to 1850, and which grow on very diverse sandy loam, clay and limestone soils. This geological variation, together with the influence of the sea breezes, which counteract the heat of the hot summers, and the moderate winters, ensure that the grapes ripen properly and without any shocks, reaching the best condition for winemaking. Each of these clusters is checked by Chester Osborn (the current generation of the family), who is in charge of tasting the berries in the vineyard and working out the optimum harvest time for each plot.

Once the grapes are ready to be turned into D'Arenberg Custodian Grenache, the work continues in the winery, using foot pressing and basket pressing. To make D'Arenberg Custodian Grenache, small batches of grapes are gently crushed, foot trodden and basket pressed. Once the must has been made, D'Arenberg Custodian Grenache is racked into old French oak barrels, where it will ferment and be aged on lees until the final blending. Finally, D'Arenberg Custodian Grenache is bottled without refining or filtering, resulting in a fragrant, sophisticated and complex wine that proves that sometimes a dislike of something and current crazes are wrong. Who would want to get rid of these vineyards?
