Tasting notes Dalamára Paliokalias 2020
Red wine Aged in wood Organic. 12 meses en barricas de roble.
Dalamára Paliokalias 2020 unveils a pale red hue that hints at its full character. On the nose, you will discover profound notes of dark cherry, reminiscent of moments of tranquillity and meditation, combined with subtle hints of incense and the delicacy of black tea. On the palate, it envelops you with its silky texture and the vibrant flavour of redcurrants, along with a ferrous nuance that adds complexity. This wine enchants from the first sip and is destined to evolve beautifully over time, standing out for its elegance and depth of flavours. With few bottles available, it is an oenological gem worthy of appreciation.

About Dalamára Paliokalias
In the wine world, there are terms for everything. And if there is one that sparks debate, it is that of a “boutique winery.” Production volume? Manual processes? Family venture? It could be all of those... or none at all. Therefore, rather than focusing on size, it is more worthwhile to look at the soul. In that regard, the story of Dalamára is nothing short of inspiring.
We head to the north of Greece, at the foot of Mount Vermion, in the city of Naoussa, a land where vineyards flourish with history. There, since 1840, the Dalamára family has cultivated grapes, produced wine, and distilled tsipouro, a spirit as traditional as it is potent. In 1971, Naoussa became Greece’s first legally recognized appellation, and the Dalamára family was already there to celebrate it.
Today, at the helm is Kostis Dalamára, the sixth generation of the family, educated in Beaune (the heart of Burgundy) and seasoned in the vineyards of Alsace, Burgundy, and Catalonia. However, if there was one thing he was certain of, it was that the true journey lay in returning home. Alongside his wife Maria, Kostis has transformed the family winery into a benchmark project for new Greek wine: organic since 1996, biodynamic since 2008 (albeit uncertified), and 100% energy self-sufficient thanks to solar panels and a small farm providing natural compost.
Yet, if there is a wine that epitomizes the soul of Dalamára, it is Paliokalias. A name that is beginning to resonate strongly outside of Greece, and it possesses all the elements to do so: character, authenticity, and terroir.
Dalamára Paliokalias comes from a historic plot of the same name located at about 300 meters altitude, with clay and limestone soils and vines that, in some cases, are over 85 years old. Here, the xinomavro reigns, a native variety as wild as it is refined, which some compare (boldly and with some justification) to the Piedmontese nebbiolo. The winemaking is as precise as it is respectful. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts and aged between 12 and 16 months in French oak barrels—some new, others second-use. The result is a wine that does not seek perfection, but truth.
Intense, vibrant, with firm tannins and a natural acidity that promises a long life ahead, Dalamára Paliokalias is a true statement of intent. It is a wine from a winery with soul, history, and territory. Boutique or not, that is another story.
