About Didier Grappe Traminer
For centuries, the world of wine has revolved around Vitis vinifera, the European species that breathes life into most of the world's great wines. However, the story of the vine did not end there. In the 19th century, when phylloxera and other diseases ravaged the vineyards of Europe, an unexpected alternative emerged: hybrid vines, the result of crossing vinifera with other American or Asian species. The intention was simple yet revolutionary: to create more resilient strains without sacrificing the essence of the wine.
Disease-resistant, adaptable to challenging climates, and generous in yield, they carved out a niche in regions where vinifera struggled. Although they were eyed with some suspicion for years, today they are experiencing a renaissance thanks to winemakers seeking authenticity, sustainability, and wines that speak of resilience.
One of these pioneers is Didier Grappe, a name that resonates powerfully in the Jura, that magical region in eastern France where tradition and rebellion coexist among hills of grey and red marl. From his small estate in Saint-Lothain, within the AOC Côtes du Jura appellation, Grappe cultivates just 4 hectares, but each one reflects a radically natural philosophy. There are no chemicals, no pesticides, no artifices. Only Bordeaux mixture, sulfur, nettle, horsetail, and a herbal toolkit of a winemaker who prefers to accompany the vine rather than dominate it.
His commitment to low yields—about 35 hl per hectare—is no coincidence. Grappe maintains that when a vine produces less, it becomes stronger. And there, amid barrels and silence, his Didier Grappe Traminer is born. A wine made entirely from organically grown traminer, hand-pressed and spontaneously fermented. It spends 18 months in barrel, unclarified, unfiltered, and without a drop of added SO₂. The result is a pure, vibrant, and luminous wine, redolent of damp earth, fresh fruit, and freedom.
