About Domaine de Villaine Rully 1º Cru Raclot

When Aubert Villaine moved to Burgundy to take up the position of co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Vosne-Romanée, he and his wife Pamela decided they would rather live outside the Côte de Nuits to enjoy the tranquility of Bouzeron, on the Côte Chalonnaise. A quiet place just north of Rully, this allowed the couple to take the time to produce their own wines under the name Domaine de Villaine. This is where Aubert realised that the limestone slopes were the best terroir for growing Aligoté grapes. Such was his determination to bring recognition to this characteristic that 6 years later, Bouzeron became the only Aligoté denomination of origin in Burgundy. Although the winery is now run by their nephew Bertrand de Villaine, it still follows the philosophy of the original courageous winemaker who knew how to take care of the terroir like a true family man. He makes white and red wines with their own personality that open our eyes to the magic of the Côte Chalonnaise.

This is clear to see in Domaine de Villaine Rully 1st Cru Raclot, a white wine made with the Chardonnay variety that comes from vineyards about 25 years old located north of the AOC Rully Premier Cru and planted on slightly clay-limestone soils with marl and limestone. Since 1986, organic agriculture has been used without pesticides or herbicides and the grapes are harvested by hand when they reach optimum ripeness. In the winery, the previously selected and destemmed grapes are gently pressed. The resulting must is fermented with native yeasts in vats and then aged in used French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months. Finally, it rests in the bottle for 12 months before being released for sale.

Aiming to preserve the authenticity of the terroir, reflecting its inimitable character and excellence, Domaine de Villaine Rully 1st Cru Raclot is a fine example of the most intimate work of one of Burgundy’s greats. An exceptional white wine that bears the hallmark of the Côte Chalonnaise and, of course, that of Aubert Villaine.

Domaine de Villaine Rully 1er Cru Raclot 2020 displays subtle elegance with its creamy, well-structured texture. On the nose, there are clear notes of green apple and citrus intertwined with hints of white flowers that add freshness. On the palate, its lightness and aromatic intensity is confirmed, with a perfect balance between acidity and smoothness, leaving a persistent and pleasant finish. This white wine is a showcase of refinement and finesse.
