About Domaine Fumey Chatelain Brouillé-Ménage

It is common for the same grape variety to have different names in various locations, even within the same region or country. This can be attributed to differences in language, local dialects, or regional winemaking traditions. These name variations may reflect the history and evolution of viticulture in different areas and are often deeply rooted in local culture and tradition. Thus, poulsard and ploussard are two different ways of spelling and pronouncing the name of the same grape. This grape variety originates from the Jura region in France and is used to produce light and aromatic red wines. The spelling and pronunciation of the name can vary from one area to another within the Jura, yet it refers to the same grape. In Montigny-lès-Arsures, a French commune located in the Jura department, Domaine Fumey Chatelain crafts wines with the Ploussard variety, among others. Its founders, Raphaël Fumey and Adeline Chatelain, established the winery in 1986 when a severe frost left them with too few grapes to sell, prompting them to vinify for the first time independently. Today, with a total of 17 hectares, their son Marin, after training in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, continues in the same direction.

Among the wines produced by the winery, Domaine Fumey Chatelain Brouillé-Ménage is a red wine made from the indigenous ploussard variety sourced from vineyards cultivated on marl and limestone soils in a place called ‘Fertans’. The 70-year-old vines are cultivated with respect, and once in the winery, the grapes are selected and destemmed to begin a 15-day maceration. Fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine ages in foudres and stainless steel tanks for 22 months. Finally, it is bottled without fining or filtration.
