About Domaine Jules Desjourneys Beaujolais Village Blanc
In 2007, he decided to take a pivotal turn in his life when he transitioned from a wine representative to a vintner. His new venture was to be christened Jules Chauvet (the esteemed vigneron of Beaujolais), to which he would append Desjourneys because he was fond of "how it resonated alongside Jules". Thus, Domaine Jules Desjourneys was born.
Armed with his new endeavor, the first stop was Fleurie, where Fabien Duperry acquired venerable vineyards (over 80 years old). His preferred sites are located both to the north, at 'Les Moriers', and to the south, within 'La Chapelle des Bois'; nevertheless, he could not overlook the remaining 38 villages that comprise the A.O.C. Fleurie-Village appellation, the true essence of the denomination.
Specifically, the A.O.C. Beaujolais-Villages is cultivated on the prime slopes of the region atop granite, sand, or eroded volcanic rock soils. The vines here are situated between 190 and 500 meters above sea level, occasionally encountering truly steep inclines. Consequently, some experts refer to this as heroic viticulture, necessitating that all tasks be performed manually. In the case of Fabien Duperry, this cultivation also extends to biodynamics, encompassing deeper considerations such as chemical-free care (for Duperry, even copper is deemed inadvisable) and a commitment to biodiversity. In these vineyards, it is common to find strains of gamay; however, chardonnay also finds its niche in this corner of the globe, south of Burgundy. Though it barely constitutes 2% of the vineyard, this variety is one of the appellation's best-kept secrets, yielding fleshy and highly aromatic wines.
None of these nuances should be lost in the cellar during vinification. At least, that’s what Fabien Duperry believes, who practices a minimally interventionist approach to production, focusing his special attention on two processes: fermentation and extended aging. These tasks fully occupy his attention, as they are pivotal in any type of wine production. As for materials, he also shuns those that disguise or mask the wine; hence, for years, wood has been absent from his cellar, favoring instead glass and stainless steel.
| 2019 | Domaine Jules Desjourneys Beaujolais Village Blanc 2019 is a lusciously creamy white, brimming with fruitiness at every turn. Aromatically, it unveils citrus notes (particularly of lime) and orchard fruits. On the palate, it is crisp and full-bodied. Expansive and silky, it boasts an enticingly fleshy core. The finish is saline-infused. |
|
| 2018 | Domaine Jules Desjourneys Beaujolais Village Blanc 2018 is a sumptuous, full-bodied white, exuding scents of white blossoms, pear, apple, and freshly baked bread. On the palate, it is incisive and forthright, boasting a delectable acidity and a saline finish. |
