About Domaine Jules Desjourneys Mâcon-Verzé

He is often referred to as “the madman of Burgundy.” This nickname is by no means unearned. Whether he takes offense to it or not, we cannot say. However, you will likely concur with us (and with others) that embarking on the venture of establishing your own winery at the age of 40 is quite a bold move. Yet, for Fabien Duperry, age was merely an inconsequential detail. It is often said that age is just a number. But you would agree that it is a venture fraught with risk, wouldn't you?

His winery Jules Desjourneys commenced its journey in 2007, in Beaune (situated between Lyon and the southern part of Burgundy), where he has been experimenting with vineyards in Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, Chénas, and Villié-Morgon. Now, he takes a step northward, crossing into Burgundy, and in the A.O.C. Mâcon-Verzé he crafts Domaine Jules Desjourneys Mâcon-Verzé. Esteemed names such as Jean-François Coche, Arnaud Ente, Pierre Morey, and Christophe Thibert (with whom he shares vineyards) will join Fabien Duperry in this phase where the spotlight turns to white wines.

In the heart of the expansive Mâconnais valley lies the town of Verzé and its surrounding vineyards. Traditionally, this region has always been synonymous with wine. As far back as 1670, royal tax inspectors reported to the king about the high quality of its vineyards, which are spread across two terrains. For Domaine Jules Desjourneys Mâcon-Verzé, the chardonnay vines used come from the upper slopes of the hillside, situated between 280 and 420 meters above sea level, west-facing, atop limestone and soft marl soils where the chardonnay thrives magnificently. The dry climate, with Mediterranean influences, does the rest. Today, the production of white wine in the Mâconnais outstrips that of Burgundy by threefold; however, these chardonnay monovarietals are gradually gaining recognition.

For Fabien Duperry, “terroir work takes precedence over winemaking,” hence Duperry shows the utmost respect for each vine and plant in his vineyards. Specifically, he employs biodynamic methods in densely planted vineyards, where labor is manual and the soil is cultivated using animal traction. In the winery, the workload or intensity lessens—to an extent—as Fabien Duperry adopts a meditative approach, merely observing and intervening as little as possible. In this manner, Domaine Jules Desjourneys Mâcon-Verzé is presented in its most natural form, unadorned by any extraneous elements, thus well-equipped with ample resources to undergo the aging process in wood. “Even a humble wine can possess complexity. I do not wish for mine to be characterized by a method, but rather to exhibit a natural beauty,” asserts Duperry.
