With full power and minerality! This is what the chardonnay in Domaine Jules Desjourneys Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Longeays is like, a white made by Fabien Duperray in southern Burgundy, in the Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC (as the name suggests).

Although less well known – and with less prestige than the neighbouring Pouilly-Fuissé AOC – the Pouilly-Vinzelles AOC is an area worth visiting. And we mean it. Don't be fooled by its consideration as a minor appellation. You will surely fall in love with the nuances and touches that the clay-limestone soil manages to impart in the grapes of its 40 hectares of vineyards that are distributed east of the Pouilly-Fuissé AOC, between Loché and Vinzelles. The high iron content is abundant in this area, located between 200 and 250 metres above sea level, with an eastern exposure that allows the chardonnay to ripen quickly. Right here we find several premiers crus and lieux dits among which Les Longeays (where this white wine is grown) stands out.

At Domaine Jules everything is biodynamic, organic and totally environmentally friendly. Hand harvesting, cluster selection and fermentation will be the most important processes in the production of Domaine Jules Desjourneys Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Longeays. Here Fabien Duperray, who renounced the use of wood years ago, experiments with different materials, notably stainless steel. This will also be very relevant during aging (which, in Fabien Duperray’s case, is characterised by being very long). Opening a bottle of Fabien Duperray is a real mystery. It is not known what time will have done, or how it will have affected their wines. This expectation is partly what has made this winemaker, who had spent his whole life selling Burgundy wines, famous and well-known. Now the spotlight is on his own wines, and they haven’t disappointed. Long live Domaine Jules Desjourneys Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Longeays!

Domaine Jules Desjourneys Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Longeays 2018 is a creamy and mainly mineral white, complex and rich in nuances. The nose is fruity, with aromas of pear, lemon, currant and peach mingling with warm bread and white flowers. The palate is full and ample, very open, with bright acidity. Smooth and mellow finish. Perfect balance between fat and mineral.
