About Domaine Saint-Cyr Chénas Les Journets

Raphaël Saint Cyr knows all too well the consequences of working with chemicals in the field, because he saw his own grandfather and uncle fall ill as a result. It is not surprising, then, that when his father put him in charge of the family winery in 2008, the first thing he did was turn the 23 hectares of the estate organic. But if this winemaker, known for having one of the largest organic domains in Beaujolais, stands out for anything, it is for the production of natural, simple, pure and, at the same time, superb wines. Especially since 2017, when he began producing his wines with full carbonic fermentation and thus achieving juicy and more unctuous wines.

Domaine Saint-Cyr Chénas Les Journets is a red wine made from the star variety of Beaujolais, gamay, from old vines over 50 years old planted in white granite soil. It is organically farmed with biodynamic treatments and yields are limited to 35hl per hectare. After a manual harvest, the whole grapes undergo cold carbonic maceration for an average of 23 days. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts and then the wine is aged in old barrels for 10 months. Finally it is bottled unfiltered and with minimal sulphur.

Considering that it is a top-tier Chénas AOP cuvée and only about 4,000 bottles are produced each year, Domaine Saint-Cyr Chénas Les Journets is a clear example of a good vintage Beaujolais resulting from 100% natural winemaking. A real reward for body and soul.

 

2019

Domaine Saint-Cyr Chénas Les Journets 2019 is an easy-to-drink red wine with aromas of red fruits accompanied by spicy notes. On the palate it is fresh, intense and balanced. A wine with well-integrated acidity, pleasant tannins and a beautiful finish that will age well for up to 15 years.
